My Lady…
By Khalil Alhakmi
My Lady…
How much I love this timeless call—
O Lady of my poetry and prose,
the grandeur of your name
within my finest lines.
O caravan of my poems,
since the day I came to know poetry,
since I was a boy,
then a storyteller,
then a poet crowned with glory.
My Lady…
O dignity of all my lived experiences,
O every echo of my soul,
from my very first wound
to my final rib.
My Lady…
O pain that walks beside me,
O dream that overflows.
O carving worthy of my wonder,
O discovery that leaves me
breathless with awe.
O history of women
in the civilization of my heart,
O moon suspended in the heavens,
O dance of brocade
at weddings dressed in silk.
My Lady…
How mischievously your tempting lips
bewitch me,
how your innocent glance
seduces my longing.
And how you slay me
without ever meaning to—
your tender, graceful coquetry
only dueling with my passion.
And with the gentlest touch,
your willow-like figure
brings me to my knees.
And how it delights me,
my Lady,
my Lady…
This beautiful possession
that is mine—
while I remain
your captive.
